I had an interesting experience today. I was asked to call one of my Coaches' new clients to see how they were doing on their Take Shape For Life program. This women has been on the program for two weeks.
Her voice sounded so dejected. "I'm doing okay, I guess" she answered. I asked her what was going on and why she didn't sound very happy. "I've only lost 9 pounds." "And how long have you been on the program?" I asked. "It's been two weeks. I think I should have lost at least a pound a day because I'm not eating alot of food."
I know many of you reading this are yelling at this screen "Oh my gosh!!! I'd love to lose 9 pounds in two weeks!!! But that is not this particular womens expectation or how she is interpreting her experience.
Her story is that nothing ever works. She's tried everything and this is her last hope. Yes...she did say this to me. Take Shape For Life IS working, but she's not allowing herself to see this. Instead she's continuing to re-tell her story. She's interpreting her results through this storyline.
Looking at it from a logical standpoint, losing 9 pounds in two weeks for a female is an excellent result. If she lost more than that, it wouldn't necessarily be safe and she'd probably start to lose muscle. I did try to explain this to her but her voice inflection told me she wasn't hearing me.
Because that didn't fit into her plot line. I'm sharing this experience not to belittle this women. But to show how we all have our stories we aren't ready to give up. We have to create scenarios in our life to prove our stories are "right" and we get very uncomfortable when we are shown where our stories may not necessary be accurate even though we can put a great spin on them.
I'm finding many areas in my life where I've become quite attached to my story and can show you why I'm "right". When it allows joy and harmony for myself and those around me, I see no reason to change it. But when I see it creating disharmony, I'm realizing it's time to see if I can change my interpretation of what is happening and allow a larger and more inclusive view of the situation.
